Avebury

Having already visited Stonehenge during the 2006-2007 visits, David has refused to visit again since you can only see the rocks from afar. The new request, Avebury. Avebury is a double circle of rocks placed even earlier than Stonehenge and you can walk among these rocks, touch them, etc. Keeping with our theme from the previous couple of sites, this day was no different and we started the walk in cloudy weather and found a steady rain by the time we decided we were done walking among the rocks.

Having now seen both sites, I can say that Avebury is impressive on land coverage as the circles would have to be viewed from the air to see their circular shape as a road goes right down the center of them and the rocks themselves are split between a couple of pastures and the town of Avebury is built right in and amongst the rocks.

Stonehenge you can walk around the rocks, Avebury you walk among the rocks. Avebury's rocks don't have the cross pieces as can still be seen at Stonehenge, and they may never have had them to begin with. Also, Stonehenge is particular rocks transported a long distance for their placement, where Avebury's rocks may have been harvested right nearby.

That being said, the rocks themselves may not hold special meaning, but their placement does and it's an impressive placement. It's also impressive to walk among these rocks and know that they are still this massive after several thousand years of weather, erosion, and potential vandalism.

Having survived the weather, we headed indoors to the cafe to partake of some lunch before heading out to our next location.
