Nunney Castle

So what happens when you're out and about in the drizzling rain, you're cold and wet from your explorations already from the day, and you see on the map that you will be going nearby another castle? Why you stop of course!!

So this is the predicament that we found ourselves . . it's still light and there was still the potential to see another castle . . why not? So we follow the small winding roads that lead us to Nunney so that we can see Nunney Castle. Lucky for us, this castle location was one which was open all the time to the public as it exists mostly as a public park area.

I must say that I was amazed. It did not have any of the size or history that we've come to expect from something entitled "castle" in this country, but it was impressive all the same. Although this castle held little strategic value that we could see, since it didn't appear to have elevated ground of any kind, and so basically was a manor house for all intensive purposes, it did have a full and still in use moat. Additionally it was impressively intact considering it's exposure to weather.

From what we can figure, standing in the drizzle and looking at the remaining construction, the original was approximately 3 floors with large windows.

Since the castle consisted of basically 1 large square there wasn't a lot to "tour" and so we were fairly quick. The construction was still impressive though and the size (height) of the castle was intimidating as we stood in the center and looked up those walls. With so much exposure the pigeons had found a fine place to roost away from most of the elements and so we didn't look too closely into some of the darker portions of the towers.

Although we were now wet from the rain again, we all were giggling like school children with our "find". For a full slideshow of pictures taken at this fabulous find, please view the slideshow below:
