Chepstow Castle

Lisa thought if she'd seen one castle she would have covered her bases and so Kenilworth should have been enough right? Well, not for her haphazard tour guide (me). I felt she needed to see a Welsh Castle since Wales is known for it's castles and so, off to Chepstow we go.

So what draws us to Chepstow you ask? Well, the castle itself is sturdy. To me, this seems to be a castle built and built-upon for the purpose of defence, not necessarily luxury. Now, I will admit that it does have some luxuries, but very few. What it does provide for is inguinuity and the full use of the latest construction techniques.

The castle as a whole is more sprawling than Kenilworth in that it is arranged more lengthwise along the river than in a square. All the buildings in the castle are linked with walls and courtyards which allow the closing off of any portion that might get taken by your opponent.

As typical of most castles in this area, the original keep was of Norman make built around 1100.

The great hall here was added later as more of a luxury item and had 2 floors.

To add decor, the alcoves of the great hall were decorated with painting.

They had some of the largest fireplaces I've seen to date to warm the stone

They had a pulley system that allowed them to be resupplied via the river.

And as with all these great castles, they had an unprecidented view of everything around them
